This global public health organization disclosed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling over two thousand jobs – by the middle of 2026.
Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring
The decision follows after the United States, previously the agency's biggest contributor, pulled out financial support earlier this period.
The US government was contributing approximately eighteen percent of the organization's overall budget, creating a significant financial gap.
Projected Staff Reductions
According to organizational estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.
This reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural departures.
"This year has been one of the most difficult in our existence, as we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritization and realignment," commented the agency's leader.
Budget Shortfall Remains
This Switzerland-headquartered organization now confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, representing almost a quarter of its required funding.
The figure marks an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.
Excluded Funding
These budget projections do not include a further 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from ongoing negotiations with various contributors.
The representative for the organization stated that the current unfunded portion of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in earlier years, attributing this to several factors:
- A smaller overall budget size
- Initiation of a fresh fundraising campaign
- An increase in member states' mandatory fees
This realignment initiative is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed structure.
