Utah Prosecuting Attorneys Charge Accused in Charlie Kirk Killing with Capital Homicide
State prosecutors on Tuesday formally charged Tyler Robinson, the young adult alleged of killing conservative figure Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will pursue the capital punishment if he is found guilty.
Legal Accusations and Aggravating Factors
Specific charges filed comprise premeditated killing, illegal use of a weapon, and witness tampering. County Attorney Jeff Gray stated that aggravating circumstances included the deceased’s public statements and the presence of children during the incident.
“This is not a take this decision lightly,” the prosecutor stated. “This determination I have made based solely on the available evidence.”
Case Findings and Reported Intent
Investigators claim that Robinson ordered his housemate to delete damaging digital communications and remain silent to police. Based on information, Robinson’s parent informed law enforcement that her son had grown increasingly ideological and had started shifting to the left, including support for gay and trans rights.
The suspect was reportedly dating his roommate, who was undergoing a gender transition.
Scene of the Shooting
The victim was fatally wounded during an appearance at Utah Valley University moments following a remark about trans people and mass shootings. Footage of the incident captured the attack.
Apprehension and Evidence
Robinson was arrested the day after after people close to him identified him from released images. He turned himself in with the help of a family friend who was a officer.
Before his surrender, Robinson apparently admitted to the shooting in a post on Discord, writing: “Everyone, it’s unfortunate, I was responsible on campus yesterday.”
Authorities also reported that DNA matching Robinson was found on a cloth wrapped on the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. The weapon was discarded near the university.
Text Messages and Marked Bullets
Further evidence featured a digital communication from Robinson to his housemate that read: “There was the chance to eliminate Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”
Officials also found cartridges with etched messages including online phrases, gaming references, and words from an anti-fascist anthem. A particular message said: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”
Legal Proceedings and Detention
The defendant will stay in custody denied bond due to the state’s intent to seek the death penalty. He was scheduled to appear in court for an first hearing.
Gray referred to the killing as “a national loss,” stating that Kirk was murdered while engaging in First Amendment rights.
