Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Charges of Lying Congress
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.
His legal representative filed the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
His attorney stated he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for multiple reasons including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
Mr Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they intended to submit several motions to terminate the case before a court case, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to handle the case.
The former director's proceedings was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from the former president after his examination into another political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
Courtroom Atmosphere
Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the magistrate state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.
Previous Events
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against the candidate were not filed, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government claim Mr Comey lied to Congress during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the upper house by stating he had not permitted a person at the FBI to release to media organizations data about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Individual Responses
In a video James Comey shared to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to opposing the former president," he commented. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."
The accusations against the former director surfaced after the former president shared on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and others.
