FBI Director Sports LFC Tie at Senate Hearing

FBI Director Kash Patel was seen in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a necktie displaying the emblem of EPL team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

His accessory selection sparked curiosity across social media. For one thing, it is extremely rare for a government official to wear a tie featuring the logo of a business or athletic club. Additionally, Patel has never openly declared support for Liverpool previously—at least not in words.

However, he has been pictured wearing Liverpool ties on at least two distinct instances. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting congressional members on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s electoral win. Back then, he was speculated to be entering the administration. Another instance took place roughly five months later, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing highlighting the capture of drug traffickers by US law enforcement.

A Collection

Notably, the necktie worn on Tuesday was different from the earlier item. The earlier version had thick stripes and a subtle logo, while the newer tie boasted thinner stripes and a more prominent logo—known as the classic design.

The fact that he owns multiple Liverpool ties implies that his choice is deliberate.

Heated Proceedings

During Tuesday’s hearing, the atmosphere turned heated on multiple occasions. Patel engaged in a shouting match with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He defended his leadership of the FBI, his dismissal of veteran staff involved in probes related to the January 6 events, and a tweet in which he announced that a suspect was in custody for the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that turned out to be inaccurate.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as cooperating with the people to identify that there was a individual in detention.”

Political Contrast

If Patel does follow Liverpool, it would represent a stark contrast of ideological allegiances. As one of the nation's top law enforcement officers, Patel has been a public face of a second Trump administration that has used authoritarian tactics to affect various areas of society.

This includes raids by ICE in public places that have led to the detention of many of immigrants irrespective of their residency or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of federal agents to left-leaning US cities in response to alleged higher offense levels—claims that have been disproven.

Liverpool’s Ethos

The team, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning teams in Europe, from one of the most liberal cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once stated: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone working for each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a portion of the benefits at the end of the day.”

Although the operations of Liverpool have changed in recent times, traces of socialist ideology persist. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, summed up his own beliefs by remarking: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the conservative party.”

Historical Strains

Liverpool’s fans also have a considerable history of opposition toward law enforcement. Much of this stems from the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the crowd of violence and intoxication. Subsequently, separate investigations revealed that the crowd crush was due to gross negligence by authorities, who had misled the public to transfer responsibility.

Patel’s Background

Patel rose to prominence after the incidents of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those detained in relation to the Capitol attack. A former lawyer and advisor to right-wing figures, Patel leveraged his association with the previous Trump government to pursue commercial projects and a career in broadcasting. In both capacities, he promoted several unproven claims, including debunked allegations of election fraud and false information about Covid-19 vaccines.
