Computer-created pictures purporting to portray Venezuela's president in custody after his apprehension by the United States have amassed many millions of views across the internet.
The Way AI Images of the President Appeared Soon After
The first fabricated synthetic picture apparently displaying him led off a plane circulated shortly after. This image was absent from any verified American sources; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Our analysis used the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was produced or modified with AI tools.
Additional synthetic visuals started circulating in the following period, appearing to show more angles of the leader in custody. Visible identifying marks on these images indicate they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
The detection tool confirms all of these images were likewise generated or edited AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Persisted
The former US president released the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite this confirmation was released, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were modified to include the grey tracksuit worn by Maduro.
Online investigation reveal these updated fakes were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art account. Once again, analysis says these further images were produced with AI tools.
