EU Maritime Forces Rescue Crew After Somalia Piracy Incident on Vessel
EU naval forces have safely freed 24 sailors from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was targeted by sea robbers off the coast of Somalia.
The vessel, which was transporting petrol from Indian ports to South Africa, was taken over on Thursday when armed pirates began shooting with automatic weapons and explosive projectiles before taking control of the vessel.
All sailors secured themselves inside a secure safe room while the pirates took control of the ship.
Successful Rescue Operation
A naval vessel, functioning under the European Union's maritime security operation, reached the tanker on the following day. Elite military units entered the craft and discovered all two dozen sailors safe and sound.
"All personnel is secure and no injuries have been documented. Throughout the incident, they remained in the citadel in constant communication with command center," officials stated, adding that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the pirates to leave the vessel before the warship arrived.
Ongoing Threat
Authorities emphasized that the danger level in the area "continues to be serious" as the armed groups are still in the area.
The mission involved a helicopter, drone and reconnaissance plane. Shortly before, a different vessel in the same area was approached by a small speedboat but managed to evade it.
Resurgence of Piracy
This event marks the most recent in a spate of attacks that have created concern about a renewal of piracy in the area.
Piracy operations had decreased when global maritime security and security measures were introduced after peaking more than a decade ago.
Nevertheless, attacks by militant groups on ships in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the past two years, have caused vessels to be diverted through the African coastline - creating new possibilities for local pirate groups.
Statistical Overview
- Multiple piracy cases of piracy occurred off the shoreline of Somalia in the previous year
- Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
- Only one incident of maritime crime was noted in 2023
Maritime security experts continue to monitor the developments as shipping companies navigate these increasingly dangerous shipping lanes.
