Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
