British Airways to provide free high-speed in-flight internet by way of satellite agreement

Flyers aboard the airline are set to enjoy fast connectivity onboard free of charge following a recent deal with SpaceX's communications company.

No-cost plus Fast Internet for All

The airline stated that this complimentary, “quick and reliable” wifi provision through the satellite provider will be available for customers flying coach, business, and first class starting soon.

Expanded Rollout Over Various Carriers

The holding firm for British Airways, International Airlines Group, announced it had secured an partnership involving the satellite firm for providing internet services on over 500 planes operated by the group's operators, such as the Irish airline, Iberia, and the low-cost airline.

Uninterrupted Wifi from Gate to Landing

British Airways explained that the rollout for this technology was included in a multi-billion pound “modernization” program that will offer smooth internet access to passengers from boarding to arrival, even when traveling across oceans and far-off locations.

Passengers will be able to connect multiple gadgets while they will not need a unique access code.

Current Internet Offerings

Restricted connectivity service is presently offered for BA flyers across most of its aircraft through their .air system.

Participants of BA’s frequent flyer program may dispatch messages plus text-only correspondence onboard at no cost, whereas flyers looking to stream audio, movies, and movies on their flight if not flying in first class may pay from four pounds ninety-nine and twenty-one pounds ninety-nine for a connectivity package.

Starlink’s Infrastructure

The provider maintains a network of many thousands of spacecraft which is operated by the billionaire's aerospace firm.

Ongoing Improvements for the Airline

Their management have been focusing to improve operations again following a period of cost cutting, technology issues, labor disputes, plus mass redundancies.

The airline noted that application of artificial intelligence contributed to the airline to bring the airline's timeliness at the best levels from over a decade ago.

Profit Outlook

Earlier this year, the carrier announced a jump for operating profits for the first half of this year, helping to push its owner earnings to grow.

IAG will release the earnings covering Q3 this summer on Friday.

Other Satellite Partnerships

British Airways’ news comes days following telecom operator Virgin Media O2 said it was working with Starlink to boost mobile network service across remote areas of the UK, by allowing users to easily connect mobile devices through satellites when no standard mobile signal exists.
