2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the wave in gaming seems especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
